Beneath The Scene: Meg & Dia

Here at COED, we like to collect the dirt. Mind you, the dirt doesn’t have to be a ‘bad’ thing, per se, it just has to be the information that you probably did not know lying beneath the scene of the music industry. The dirt we found for today’s beneath the scene, however, is pretty freakin’ filthy.

THE BAND: Meg & Dia
HOMETOWN: Draper, Utah
MEMBERS: Sisters, Meg and Dia Frampton.
THEIR DEAL: These sisters are cute as hell. They’ve got catchy little songs and sweet lyrics to go along with their adorable songs. So let’s get back to the ‘these sisters are cute as hell’ part. I mean, they’re pretty smokin’. But what’s really hot about them is the word on the street that they have no sexual standards. I mean NONE.

Now I’m all about free love, but according to insiders, Meg and Dia give the concept a whole new twist. People who know the girls best are talking and here’s what they’re saying: Sure, they’ll screw around with the boys in bands that they tour with. And everyone else, too. That means you, fans! Are we gonna complain about that? Hell no. But we just thought we’d let you know.

Artists to Watch: 4 Hot Bands Rolling Stone Missed

Maybe you didn’t know this, but Rolling Stone releases a super-rad article a couple of times a year called “Artists To Watch,” which includes brief but well rounded bios of up-and-coming artists in the music world. While I’ll admit that the magazine definitely has misses each year (They’re not freakin’ fortune tellers), they had some great hits this year.

My favorite of their “Artists to Watch” this time is Georgia’s Dead Confederate. And I’m not just saying this because they made me BBQ one night while they were crashing with friends of mine in Queens. (Even though the BBQ was soulfully delicious). Rather, they’re just an amazing band. I’ve caught them live a few times and they are truly one of those bands that makes you go: “Hold on, why aren’t these guys famous yet?”

They have been working their butts off for years now making Nirvana-Meets-Dirty-South tunes and their ever-improving songwriting is a testament to that. You should do yourself a favor and check them out while you can still afford to see them play live. Also on Rolling Stone’s list this year were: Lykke Li, 3OH!3, Ra Ra Riot, Laura Izibor, and Low Vs Diamond. While these are all great artists to watch out for, I think Rolling Stone missed a few. So here’s COED’s four additions to 2008’s “Artists to Watch.”

Cheerleaders of the US Olympic Redeem Team Players

We’ve come a long way since the Dream Team of 1992. Bird and Jordan have been replaced by Bryant and James. And just because they play in the NBA doesn’t mean they’re the best. But at the Summer Games in Beijing this year, we stand a good shot at taking gold. And what better way to celebrate our chances with super hot chicks? (Hint: There is no better way.)

The game doesn’t air until 2:30am Sunday morning (Saturday night, for most of you), so check out the cheerleaders from all the starter’s home teams and call it a day.

US News & World Report Ranks The Best Colleges

U.S. News has collected data from more than 1,400 colleges to bring you this year’s rankings. But remember, just because these are the best schools for academics doesn’t mean they’ll give you the best all-around college experience.

Plus, you’ll end up paying for it for the rest of your life.

Michael Phelps: The King of Facebook

Michael Phelps is the king of the Olympics and now he is the newly crowned king of Facebook.

An August 18th article said his Facebook fan page has 859,387 followers. Now, four days later, Michael Phelps’ Facebook Fan page has ballooned to over 1,322,777 followers (in the 15 seconds it took to write that last sentence and hit refresh the number jumped to 1,322,909 - a staggering jump of 133 members).

Parents Just Don’t Understand: Montana Jr. vs Gretzky Jr. High School QB Showdown

Nick Montana, son of Joe and 49er folklore, who recently transferred to an ultra prep school in California (think the high school from The O.C.) to play quarterback and get more attention at his age than his dad got when he was 30.

Sounds like the perfect father-son-sports-domination-story right? Until some pesky sophomore named Trevor has the skills to compete for the job and who happens to have a really Great dad, as in the Great One: Wayne Gretzky.

Musician LeRoi Moore, saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band and one of its founding members, died Tuesday afternoon. According to a statement released on his website, the death was caused by unexpected complications from an ATV accident he sustained at the end of June earlier this year, at his house in Virginia.

Top Heavy: Keeley Hazell

As you, the wonderful readers of COED know well, the best part about boobs is, no matter how many you see, you always want to see more boobs. Even bad boobs you want to see, if only just to know what they look like. And good boobs, those never get boring.

But when an elusive Perfect Pair graces you with its presence, each glance is like getting punched in the solar plexus by horniness. Your blood runs cold, palms drip with sweat and an animalistic desire overtakes your entire being. It’s almost too much to handle. So take a deep breath, and prepare yourself for the absolute awesomeness that is Keeley Hazell. Be strong.

100 College Presidents Support 18 Year-Old Drinking Age

College students, most of whom are over the age of 18, can vote, enlist in the military and yet are not considered mature enough to sit down at their local bar and have a beer.

All that may change very soon as, “College presidents from about 100 of the nation’s best-known universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus,” says the Associated Press.

Olympic Pole Vault Showdown: Yelena Isinbayeva vs Allison Stokke

Yelena Isinbayeva, the slavic stunner, just won Olympic gold in the pole vault competition. So we know she’s good. But is she hot enough to beat the goddess of Track and Field, Alison Stokke?

We could spend all night trying to decide, so we hand the judgement over to you.

On Saturday Jamaica’s Usain “Lightning” Bolt ran the length of a football field in just over 9.5 seconds, making him the fastest man to have ever walked this Earth — not a bad claim to fame!

In this breakdown of his daily fitness and diet regiment Bolt admits maintaining his 6′4” 13 stone, 8 lb physique (193 lbs), without supplements, while still being able to enjoy the occasional Guinness and Red Bull.

Katy Perry Kissed A Girl… & the 16 Year-Old Liked It (Video)

Yes boys and girls, the Christian Right is once again having a roar over a ‘life imitates art’ moment that occured during a recent Katy Perry show.  Turns out, the 23 year-old pop-sensation ’snogged’ 16 year-old, lesbian Jenna Buhmann while performing her big Summer hit “I Kissed A Girl” on the Washington leg of the Warped Tour.

The seemingly innocent kiss, coupled with the song’s message has caused feelings of outrage to her Christian preacher parents.  Her mother came out on record citing “I hate the song. It promotes homosexuality and its message is disgusting.”  Surprisingly, the jail-bait recipient of the kiss does not share the same sentiment, as she expressed herself on her YouTube blog. Alls I can say is thank God cute Katy’s not a Kyle or he’d probably find himself holed up in the clink.

Beneath The Scene: Gavin Rossdale

THE BAND: Gavin Rossdale

HOMETOWN: LA/UK

MEMBERS: Gavin Rossdale and who ever will play with him.

THEIR DEAL: Gavin Rossdale as tried, tried, and tried again to replicate the success he once had with alt-rock band, BUSH, in the ’90’s. And he has failed, failed, and failed. Not only that, but he married superdiva, Gwen Stefani, who DID manage to accelerate her career after her run with No Doubt in the ’90’s…so that’s gotta be a blow to the ego. He started a solo project called INSTITUTE after BUSH and now is spending his time swooning 40-year-olds with his contemporary rock. Read More »

Tuesday’s Album Releases: Toadies, Family Force 5

I simply could not be more excited to lay the wonderful news of album releases on you today. This is primarily because a band that has been one of my favorite bands since I was 10 years old finally released a new album.

In fact, the first time I ever used the internet, their band’s name was the first thing I ever typed into a search engine. I sat there at that mysterious computer in my dad’s office and found the letters on the keyboard: T-O-A-D-I-E-S.

The Toadies have remained one of my favorite bands since then, but they haven’t released nearly as much material as I hoped at age 10 I’d have by age 24. Nonetheless, their pre-released single, “No Deliverance“, tickles me with the same sacrilegious southern feel with which The Toadies have always managed to catch me off guard. Read More »

Beneath the Scene: 3OH!3

THE BAND: 30H!3

HOMETOWN: Boulder, Colorado

MEMBERS: Sean Foreman, Nathaniel Motte

THEIR DEAL: These two guys from Colorado have girls sweating everywhere, especially at the hot and sticky Vans Warped Tour this summer, which they’re co-headlining. Their rap/rock mix attracts a diverse crowd and their messed-up lyrics are going to be a bad influence on kids everywhere. With label backing and tens of thousands of Myspace hits per day, you could definitely say they’re blowin’ up.

THE DIRT: Word on the street is that these dudes made 3OH!3 as a total joke. Rumors are flying backstage that they’re  “real” musicians who made a catchy band that they know is bad, just to get famous. And to get chicks. Which they are getting, all the F’ing time. See what guys will do to get laid?

Richman - 3OH!3

Tuesday’s Album Release

Of all the albums released today, I have to admit, I’m sooooooo excited about The Jonas Brothers (“A Little Bit Longer”) and New Kids On The Block (“Greatest Hits“). In which sort of warped teeny bop universe do we release cds from both of these acts on the same day? It’s perfect, really. Thirty-year-old moms can take their 12 year old daughters out for new cds today and they’ll both have something to blast on the way home.Yippie!

While both albums seem to be getting acceptable reviews, considering their respective genres, I still feel like something is missing: HANSON. A simultaneous Hanson release would be the only thing that could make me “happier” on this day.

If you haven’t realized I’m kidding by now…that’s fine. Go ahead and take me seriously. I’m sure that The Jonas Brothers and New Kids On The Block both have many redeeming songs on their new releases.

But honestly…I am moderately excited to see what comes of Extreme’s new release, “Saudades de Rock”. (Who knew they were still making music? WHO KNEW, I ask you.) Read More »
