Vanity Fair recently came out with “Hollywood’s Next Wave” of teen superstars, and besides the fact that at 25 I already feel too old to know who half of the kids are (25! Too old!), there was one other tiny piece of information that made me feel a little strange. Out of the 28 teens featured in the article, 2 of them were something other than Caucasian.
Either Young Hollywood has systematically sorted out all of its ethnicity, or Vanity Fair is straight up stupid.
A big magazine like VF has loads of money, and the power to change how we as a society view ourselves. They can break down barriers and send that message to hundreds of thousands of readers across the county. Why oh why, then, are they taking Hampton-esque pictures of kids who all kinda look the same (half of whom will probably disappear into obscurity in 3 years), and not-so-subtly telling America that the media is still whitewashed? I’ll answer that rhetorical question. They’re doing it because like most big media conglomerates, they’re more concerned with money than they are with actually saying something of merit. thanks asshole, you just successfully introduced affirmative action to the tabloid world
I am so tired of people always whining about race!!! Find a new subject to complain about…
Why is everyone always harping about race?
Who cares?
Quit being so goddamned sensitive about the color of people’s skin, including your own.
It doesn’t matter.
Ok, that is stupid, zoe kravitz appears in that magazine, is she white??
I agree with the Editor. Although we shouldn’t emphasize race, it does matter. There are many ethnic teens that are actors.
Vanity Fair focusing on the ‘Hamptonesque’look is part of their advertising ploy to be ‘available’ to the younger set, the “white” america. The fact that these unknowns become overnight millionaires is what gets me. Who are they? Why should we care about them? Yeah, many of these publications will through a bone to the ethnic races by placing a so called bi-racial person on the pages and that’s to represent all of the races…Put a caucasion person on the pages and what, worship them? I don’t have much care for these pretenious younger actors of today. At twenty five one can still appeal to the teen audience. The fact that they at 25 are now young adults…’responsible’ and are still immature…that’s my opinion…There is not much emphasis placed on who, what and why we should know them, besides they’re actors..I don’t really care…they will not make an impact on my life…These younger actors of today they look much older than they confess to be. They take themselves too seriously, and are insipid, self-absorbed, and moronic.
Thank for for stating this Editor. No one’s sking for the issue to be the United Colors of Bennetton, but would be nice to see some color in this VF “Hollywood ‘Next Wave.’ There have to be plenty of up and coming Asian actors, Spanish actors, Black actors and others under 25 who happen to not be white in Hollywood.
The posters who are complaining about the Editor’s valid gripes are clearly not minorities, so of course they wouldn’t understand why the lack of diversity represented in this article about Hollywood’s next big things would be an issue. This topic still matters and should be discussed ad nauseum until the appropriate actions are taken to fix it.
who gives a shit, im pretty sure of there were good /better minority actors they would be featured. Everyone makes such a big deal about race that it itself becomes a big deal
I find it very amusing that many of you actually beleive talent has anything to do with who the media decides to cover (classic example Paris Hilton, or anyone from The Hills). I work in Marketing, and at the end of day, it is the media, and agents, and publicist that CULTIVATE stars. We put money behind them, we get get them invites to parties, we call the press to get them coverage, and essentially make the hot commodities. VF, like Disney, like US Weekly can make the decision to give more coverage to minorities, and promote diversity, and they simply don’t. Why don’t they do this more frequently, frankly regularly? And why are you all so scared to ask that question? Promoting diversity shouldn’t be something that provokes such hostility, like many of the comments I have read.
Maybe, if mags start including people of non-white European ancestry, without designating them to the ’special issue’ every two years, then people wouldn’t complain. Race will become irrelevant when a non-white person is as much represented (without all the stereotypes) in the media as a white person.
obviously only people who don’t care that mainly white people are in these magazines (ryan/jason) are white!! i agree that vanity fair needs to open up to more cultures, because they have so much power and ability to create a new society- one that is not Caucasian oriented.
NEWSFLASH: Most of us “white females” don’t look like those girls in the picture either! Unfortunately, most of our husbands/boyfriends DO look like the overweight guy in the middle though.
I totally agree with the editor on this one!The article focused on the up and coming and unknowns….How about Melonie Diaz,Elijiah Kelley,Alice Braga, Jurnee Smollett,Keke Palmer,Victor Rasuk, etc?!
Some of those people I’ve never heard of (ms anonymos) but i loved Kelley in Hairspray and Rasuk in Lords of Dogtown and Raising Victor Vargas though!
Melonie Diaz is a good one, now I’d love to see her in one of these pictures in a bathing suit
vanity fair’s bias toward white actors is nothing new…i cancelled my subscription there more than 10 years ago citing their exclusions and/or token representation of people of color in any of their hollywood-centric issues.
really, there is SUCH an issue at vanity fair about people of color! has been for a v. long time.
Jason, I am so tired of racists whining about how we need to ignore the exclusion of minorities and to find a new subject to talk about so the status quo will continue on.
Hella, just because I said I was tired of hearing people complain about Race does not mean I am a Racist! It simply means I am tired of hearing people always complain about it.
Zoe Kravitz not white but Jewish and African American, Rob Brown African American, and Summer Bishil a little of everything.
Zoe Kravitz? Rob Brown? C’mon there are way more talented minority actors then them if anything they could have been added to these additions….Rachael Taylor? Nobody knows who the hell she is except for her “hot chick” role in transformers for about 30 min onscreen! Favfan the author of the article said there were 2 ppl of nonwhite origin already out of 28…so he forgot one lol My god…are there any hispanic actors or asians even in this spread?!!!!
Damn, 2 out of 28!That is pretty bad, how could people not notice the deficit? LMAO @ Real- I forgot she was even in Transformers to be honest
Kudos to the Editor for putting a light on racism in Hollywood! It’s hard to be an female actor in Hollywood but even harder to be a minority too! The roles are slim to none
I’m glad the editor notices the lack of minorities being represented in the media. Of course White males are gonna be tired of people “complaining about race” because it doesn’t affect them. They have no idea what it’s like to be ostracized and essentially denied an equal representation in America.
Some of these comments are sort of funny when you look to the right here and see Who’s Hot. No complaints about that?
