After the success of Transformers, Hollywood has turned their eyes towards cartoons from the eighties in hopes of finding the next big franchise.
G.I. Joe looks to be the next action-based cartoon plucked from the 80s, with Sienna Miller cast as the Baroness. However, there was one show that combined the best aspects of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. A show that was one of the most popular in its heyday and could be one of the most lucrative franchises of all time: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
And Joel Silver, producer of The Matrix, wants to bring back the franchise in style.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe told the story of Adam, the arrogant Prince of the planet Eternia, who was chosen by a Sorceress to bare the mantle of He-Man and defend the secrets of Castle Grayskull from Skeletor and his Evil Horde. The one who possessed the Castles’ secrets would have absolute power. He-Man lasted 130 episodes and later spawned a spin-off, She-Ra: Princess of Power, the perennial favorite action cartoon amongst young girls.
To many of us He-Man is an icon, and the last thing we want is for the upcoming movie to be a rehash of 1987’s Masters of the Universe starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man. If screenwriter Justin Marks has his way, that won’t be a problem. Marks has been a He-Man fan all his life and wants the movie to be similar to Batman Begins, where we see not only the beginning of He-Man but also of Skeletor. “If we don’t see the humanity and truth in what Skeletor’s trying to do, then the story’s not compelling,” Marks recently stated.
But, He-Man doesn’t just have a screenwriter, comic book writer, artist, and filmmaker: Kaare Andrews is also a He-Man fan and wants to direct the film. Kaare is so dedicated that he put together out of his own pocket an animated presentation that served as a pitch for his vision of a He-Man film. He was also kind enough to post this pitch online.

It’s sad that it’s remakes that are getting huge budgets.
Why not have something original with a big budget?
