MGM Rolls Out Their Latest Schedule of Remakes, Including…Robocop?

Robocop

Let’s get right down to business. From MGM’s press release:

MGM is planning an exciting fall and winter release schedule. In partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, MGM will bring new installments of two of its tentpole franchises — the new James Bond movie QUANTUM OF SOLACE and Steve Martin in PINK PANTHER 2. MGM will also release United Artists’ international thriller VALKYRIE, starring Tom Cruise on October 3.

With the appointment of Parent, MGM will enter its new phase of evolution by focusing on its major movie franchises highlighted by JAMES BOND and PINK PANTHER sequels, THE HOBBIT, THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2, THE OUTER LIMITS, ROBOCOP, DEATH WISH and FAME, among others.

Holy crap, my prayers have been answered: they are remaking every movie ever for the fourteenth time! Just look at that list - I was aware of James Bond and The Hobbit, but the Thomas Crown Affair…2?? Impossible! Pinch me, for I must be dreaming.

In all seriousness, one title from the list did intrigue me is Robocop. Ain’t It Cool pondered the merits of a Robocop sequel, and I must agree with them: I can’t find a good reason for it to exist, like most remakes that get green-lighted based on the strength of the franchise’s name.

Robocop is a nostalgia trip for sure, but I can’t seem to remember much about it, outside of Peter Weller looking pretty rad and blowing sh*t up. Maybe it’s not a bad idea after all…

On the other hand, the Thomas Crown Affair 2 is a guaranteed WIN. Who doesn’t want to see Pierce Brosnan globe-trotting with babes and money? It sounds like a 2-hour P. Diddy music video.
