I’ll admit it: I log onto sites like Perez Hilton almost daily.
Why? Mostly because I’m avoiding work that I should be doing—a writer who hates staring at a computer screen spends a lot of time procrastinating—but also because I like the idea of watching celebrities act stupid. It’s lame, and a little selfish, but watching someone who’s got more money and power and status than I do make horrible life or outfit decisions is entertaining to me.
Am I jealous? Maybe a little. But I think the biggest motivator to peruse gossip blogs is the desire to break though the façade of Hollywood. I just can’t believe everyone is that cool and calm and collected and beautiful all the time. The writer in me wants to see the reality behind the fake tan.
But yeah, I enjoy a good public breakdown just as much as the next person.
The thing I’ve been noticing in all my celebreality procrastination, however, is the huge coverage gap between men and women. Who’s drama are we always dishing up? Lindsay’s, Britney’s, Paris’s, Nicole’s, Jessica’s, Beyonce’s, Angelina’s, and whoever is Leonardo DiCaprio’s recent arm candy. The only two dudes who even come close to the overexposure Hollywood starlets receive are Brad Pitt and strangely-silent soccer player David Beckham.
What’s going on here? Is it because men run a lot of the media outlets, and therefore dictate how much attention is paid to women? Maybe, but the issue I have with that theory is that dudes really don’t buy People or US Weekly, and certainly don’t watch E! and VH1 with the vigor women do. The average man doesn’t really care which celebrity chick loses or gains weight. Either he thinks she’s hot or he doesn’t. Adding or subtracting 10 pounds isn’t going to make a difference, and yet, there’s a blog dedicated to that very thing. Who created such a site? Who views it?
Could it be that women are actually allowing our famous female counterparts to be judged more harshly than the men of Hollywood?
Anyone who’s ever run a childhood lemonade stand knows demand dictates supply, and the intense attention paid to celebrities will die off as soon as the public deems it so. The question is, will we ever do such a thing? Will we ever get tired of judging people more famous than ourselves? And mostly importantly, are women allowing that judgment to come down the hardest on other females?
Tell me what you think! I’m listening, and leaving my hypercritical shoes in the closet.
