Ben Stein Blames the Holocaust on Darwinism

I would love to say that the above is just a sensational title intended to drive clicks or readers, but sadly, it is the most elemental way that I could sum up the movie, “Ben Stein’s Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed.” It is a film that the aforementioned financial columnist, media figure and former Nixon White House speechwriter (Ben Stein), has helped create to further the Intelligent Design agenda. So naturally when making a farcicle argument that defies rational thinking and science, the next best bet is to dredge up emotional statements with skewd fact patterns behind them. Worse still, the producers initiate Michael Moore-like techniques that when not used by Michael Moore (like him or hate him) do not work. Whichever camp you are from, you need to recognize that Moore has skills with his propaganda machine - Stein does not.

COED Magazine totally bullshi**ed our way into a secret showing of “Expelled,”and got to sit next to legitimate publishers like Scientific American and CNN.com, but they were just as floored as we were. I always assumed that Ben Stein was an intellectual; someone driven by reason or at least some modicum of factual based thought process. Not hating on faith or religion, but that by definition is not science - so to claim scientific basis for Intelligent Design is for another debate. Our issue was with the claim that Darwinism drove the Holocaust. It is not just politically correct to say that the previous statement is obscene, it is the only rational way to defend the assertion that a meglomaniacal lunatic with delusions of grandeur was responsible for those attrocities. You can be an uninformed reader and claim: the Holocaust never happened, it wasn’t the Nazi’s, it was Global Warming, Intelligent Design made it LOOK like the Holocaust happened even though it didn’t, etc. Either one is acceptable in the inner sanctum of your own batshit-insane mind, but to assert that that Evolutionary Science was the cause of genocide is quite irresponsible.

In a base way, I understood what Stein was trying to say. In the film, his claim is that the Nazi’s were looking to create a master race by killing the Jews, thereby allowing for the breeding of an pure-Aryan race of humans. That follows the tenant of evolution, the breeding of certain organisms to propogate features that are advantageous for their offspring. Stein skips right over trying to scientifically explain how genocide is not really the same as natural selection - but I guess I am nitpicking. That is where my understanding of Ben Stein’s insanity ends. His next claims are that if Intelligent Design were more widely promoted, it would illeviate the drive to adapt human development because after all, only God can do that (according to Ben).

So if Hitler had just said that he whiped out millions of Jews because he plainly didn’t like them - the film’s argument falls completely to sh*t. But having sought a master race, makes it Darwin’s fault.

Dear Mr. Stein, the fact that you made this movie is proof that natural selection has failed us all. You have been allowed to breed and spread your ignorant, fascist views to another level of uneducated consumer. Damn you, Damn Visene for supporting you, and Damn anyone who invested in your stupid-assed movie. You have set scientific discovery back 10 years of open-discussion and may God have mercy on your soul.

    oh J,

Saw it. Loved Ben Stein for YEARS.

Yes, he has no cred b/c his assumptions are bat-shit insane.

The liberal part is the funniest of all…so thank you for the laughter. I think you are missing the greater claim that intellectualism/Darwinistic thoughts drove the Holocaust.

    LOL

I am a lover not a fighter Mr. Clark. No attempt to be harsh, but writing while in class and pissy at this teacher who is 65 and trying to teach us about “internet user trends.”

Painful - though we do rule certain quadrants of the ever expanding universe.

It’s well-accepted that the questionable science of eugenics was derived from concepts established by Darwinian evolution. There were social eugenics experiments all around the world in the early 20th century (not just in Nazi Germany, but in the UK and USA as well).

Why dispute a minor detail that is acknowledged by nearly everyone familiar with the subject? Is this the kind of rationale they teach these days? “Hm, I’ve never encountered that particular bit of trivia before, therefore it can only be false!”

Darwinism can be defended without falling into the mistake of trying to defend Eugenics as well.
