Follow The Money: McCain to Pick Mitt Romney As Running Mate

romney-endorses-mccain-21408.jpg

Sen. John McCain will choose businessman and former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney as Vice President, in his bid for the White House this November, a source closely connected with the McCain campaign, who asked to remain anonymous, told us earlier this afternoon.

Though others were close in the running, the choice ultimately came down to the money–not the man. According to our source, the campaign narrowed their Vice Presidential options to Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, the two most successful opponents of McCain in the bid for the Republican nomination. But despite Huckabee’s sway with far Right conservatives and evangelical voters, Romney packs the deepest fund-raising pockets.

As a successful businessman and prominent member of the staggeringly wealthy Mormon community, Romney brings with him the potential to raise “upwards of $60 million in 30 to 60 days, whereas Huckabee could only raise $10 to $15 million,” says our source.

McCain needs those types of numbers to be competitive with the money-sponge that is the Obama campaign, which has 1.7 million individual donors–as well as the Hollywood machine–and is ringing-out advertising dollars across the country, saturating voters in his ‘50 State Strategy‘ to win the White House.

“How the hell did the publisher of the ‘Top 20 Side-Boobs of All Time‘ get this scoop,” you must be asking yourself, right now. (We were asking ourselves the same question.) And here’s the answer: It’s all part of the McCain campaign’s plan to directly target college-age voters, in an attempt to sway them away from Sen. Obama, says our source.

Additionally, the campaign wants to solidify their ticket far in advance of the Obama campaign making their VP choice, in order to get a “head start” on the surge in fund-raising they expect to receive with the announcement of Romney as the Republican VP pick.

So next time two dudes in suits knock on your door, they might want more than to proselytize about the Book of Mormon…

UPDATE: We understand better than anyone how crazy it seems that we got this story first, so a healthy level of skepticism is expected. But we stand by the accuracy of our reporting on this, and will give you as many new details as possible in the coming days–including the name of our source, if we can.

I’m calling bullshit on this. Major, major bullshit. He’s not considering Fuckabee, he’s considering a newer face for the GOP: Sarah Palin, Carly Fiorina, or Condi.

    “staggeringly wealthy Mormon community”
    LOL!

Seriously? First less then half of Mormons live in the US mostly South America. 2nd Most US Mormons are crazy broke because we still have large families. (Bush policies and lack of policies have made having children more expensive then having a 2nd home)

Also Mitt Romney is popular in Utah not because he’s Mormon as Harry Reid also is but seriously not popular here.

Mitt Romney is very popular here because when the Olympics were full of corruption and bankruptcy and we were about to be embarrassed in front of the whole world he came out and helped clean it out, balance the budget, and keep it safe without becoming a security intrusive only a few months after 9/11.

A lot of Mormons who know is biography hope he can do for our beloved America what he did for business and the Olympics. (he may have been able to if he wasn’t so crappy at politics, IE running to far left in Massachusetts and too far right in the GOP primary)

Relative to the court of public opinion though I hope Mitt doesn’t get picked. Just like evangelicals paid the price for Bush Support, and Blacks paid the price for backing OJ so we Mormons will surely be give negative credit thing possible by the left and right wing media.

  4. Lori says :

By most estimates, the Mormon Church is the wealthiest church in the United States. And although many Mormon families are poor (because they have so many children and because they give a lot of money to the Mormon Church), there are, in fact, a lot of extremely wealthy individuals who are Mormon. The Marriott family, Jon M. Huntsman Sr. and his sons, just to name a few. And by the way, they gave BIG when he was running in the primary–both to his campaign as well as PACs that supported his nomination.

Totally makes sense from a money standpoint, especially with Cindy’s finances under greater scrutiny. I can’t wait to see Romney try to convince the American people that he is not in fact a space alien occupying a human body.

  6. shiggz says :

LOL Aaron, Its true Mitt does have that “stiff” look much like fellow space alien Sr Gore.

  7. Aaron says :

Hello, my name is Mitt Romney. I’m a lot like you. I grew up on Earth. I eat human food, and my knees bend forward. My wife and children are human also. Please vote to give me power in your government.

This is Mitt Romney, human being, and I approve this message.

  8. Aaron says :

Hehe you’re totally right about Al Gore.

  9. Waylon says :

    The differences are:

    1) Mitt Romney has a better tan

2)Al Gore is worried about planet earth while Mitt Romney is worried about planet mormon where all his wives are going to live with him after he dies

  10. MB says :

Well I can tell you a few things you got wrong.
#1- Not all mormons are wealthy. I happen to be a not so wealthy Mormon and their are TONS of us out there.
#2- Mitt Romney pledged a while ago that he was done using his own money so that makes no difference. The fact that he has helped turn so many business around means that he is chummy with the CEO’s of many big companies (EBAY among others)
#3- Mormon Missionaries are NOT allowed to talk politics period. I know because I used to be one. Infact, every election year the church officials make a statement to the congregations cautioning the members to leave church and politics as seperate issues.
#4- McCain is actually waiting until AFTER Obama announces who his VEEP will be. This is so that he can counteract the effects with his choice. Romney is at the top of the list but he hasnt been picked yet. They could go a different way depending on who Obama picks. The democrats have their thing like two weeks before the Republicans so he has until Sept to make a choice. Obama has until August.
So your source is crap, sorry dude

  11. Waylon says :

Wow MB. You must be a real insider.

  12. papa bear says :

it would be a good pick politically. Conservatives like Romney more than McCain who is basically a Democrat and nearly became one last year. (don’t believe the ‘McCain = W Pt. 2′ load of crap.)

It will be a more formidable ticket than many might believe. If you saw in the primaries a while back when they asked Obama supporters to name one thing he accomplished politically not a single one could name one thing he’s done in office. Not one bill, not one filibuster against a bill nothing.
Once the General campaign kicks in you better believe that difference is going to be brought into stark relief.
Add onto that Romney’s STRONG record of getting budgets balanced and books cleaned up and efficient (which the US desperately needs right now) and you have a ticket that could win it unless Obama gets a real dynamite VP candidate on his side (Gore would not be that guy. He’d invigorate the Dem base but he is too polarizing for indies and tweener GOP’ers).

  13. Brian Quinn says :

Mitt Romney is the third most unappealing Republican out there, just barely ahead of Giuliani and Thompson. Everyone knew who he was and he took advantage of that superficial fact that he looks like a president even though he would be a terrible one.

  14. roman says :

    papa bear–

The GE’s already rolling and check it: nobody gives a damn. People want change. Bush had all the experience and accomplishment in the world and all we have to show for it is shame and recession.

Romney’s a horrible choice. It’s bad luck to take a guy who you beat in the primaries. I half don’t believe this, but the other half tells me McCain thinks he can’t win without Michigan. And why is that? Bush never did.

  15. Eli says :

Roman: I totally agree with everything you just said. Please SMART PEOPLE make comments! See how much more satisfying it is when a comment makes sense and isn’t full of spelling errors!!!

Back to Romney. Here’s what would make it worth it though: to see McCain and Romney dancing to some rock n roll to try to be hip for the kids. They probably won’t do it but God I wish they would.

Sad that so many commenters are dwelling on stupid or false reasons to like or not like a McCain-Romney ticket.

ATTENTION COLLEGE-AGE PEOPLE: OBAMA is a dangerous liberal-fascist and/or empty suit. Most people older than you know this; it’s time to grow up and realize that wisdom does come with age.

Mitt Romney would be the best, overall VP McCain could chose. He is smart, likable, knows his stuff, and has a lovely wife (which is an excellent test of someone’s character). He will also assure an electoral majority via two or more states in the Midwest.

PLEASE, the Presidency, and by extension, Vice-Presidency, is serious stuff. Show some smarts and see Obama for what he is (or isn’t).

And hope for a McCain-Romney ticket!

  19. Ted says :

Romney adds a net nothing to the ticket; his negatives at least approximate the positives.

McCain NEEDS Alaska Gov Sarah Palin (if he wants to win in November) — whose positives are too numerous to mention here (with no negatives).

    – and don’t cite Palin’s lack of experience, since she’s got 10 times that of Obama!!!

  20. Boggle Brain says :

Here is the thing… What we are debating something that does not matter. There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that McCain + any VP candidate can squeeze the presidency away from Obama. As a human being Obama is simply smarter than McCain and thus surrounds himself with better people and thus is able to run a better campaign. So although it seems interesting in the present, ultimately it is totally inconsequential, this is a dog and pony show McCain, will never sit behind the desk in the Oval Office.

REALLY FUNNY (BUT TELLING) FROM JOSHUALAWSON.BLOGSPOT.COM:

CNN Still Can’t Bring Itself to Say Palin’s Name

Last night on Election Center with Campbell Brown, a bunch of CNN talking heads discussed potential VP’s for John McCain. They mentioned about 12 names overall, and also threw in a couple nonsensical wildcards just for one. One person they didn’t mention? Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin.

It’s becoming embarrassing to the MSM to watch their avoidance of a VP candidate nearly every serious pundit and analyst considers to be one of the frontrunners, but one of the best choices for McCain. Bill Kristol of the New York Times and The Weekly Standard actually came out a short while ago and flat-out predicted that Palin would be McCain’s VP choice. But instead of even mentioning her name, CNN touted Joe Lieberman as the best option for McCain and one of their “experts” even claimed “the right would love it”. They must have been talking to the three Obamacons again (oh those ever elusive Obamacons…). This kind of crap reporting is why CNN is getting clobbered by Fox News.

How typical. I agree with previous commentors on this topic. It really appears as if the MSM is quite frightened of Gov. Palin. Let’s hope McCain makes the right choice.

    OK, I’ll bite.

If you think Romney adds “nothing” to a McCain ticket, you are either very stupid, or an Obama supporter.

Whatever weeknesses you may perceive in him, Romney is far and away the strongest candidate for the VP slot. Palin pales, and Jindhal is just too inexperienceds to be serious contender.

And as for the idiot who thinks this election is a slam-dunk for Obama, check out Rasmussen’s web site, which puts the candidates within four or so points of each other (which is pathetic for Obama at this juncture).

  23. levotb says :

It’s August 23, folks, and Mr. O has picked street fighter Biden as VP. This news story alone mandates anti-conservative Old Man McCain to “reach out” to the base he’s flipped off for so long. The best way for him to reach out is to pick Romney, but such a move would not be based on money or Romney’s ability to raise it. It would be based on votes–the votes of hundreds of thousands of conservatives who left the GOP after Romney bowed out and thousands more who left, as I did, years before. Romney is the future of the GOP–there IS no one else. Jindal is too young and comes from a corrupt, small state. He’d make a good VP in 8 years. Pawlenty isn’t known outside of the Midwest. Rove says Pawlenty would help McCain carry Iowa (which has gone Democrat) and Minnesota. But Pawlenty probably couldn’t help McCain carry Michigan, and Romney can. Michigan has 7 more electoral votes than Minnesota, and that could be the margin of difference in this election. Romney gives McCain Michigan and possibly Colorado (which Romney won in the primary). What Romney MIGHT give McCain is Massachusetts, even with Obama picking Biden. Kennedy is not a factor now; otherwise, I’d give Mass. to Obama. Romney won Mass. handily in the primary. Romney also puts Maine into play, something Pawlenty couldn’t do. Romney won the Maine primary. In fact, Romney won 11 states in the primary. A lot of folks have forgotten that fact. And he was second to McCain in the popular vote. The biggest concern about Romney seems to be coming from evangelicals who are Suckabee fans. McCain will not be selecting Suckabee! Romney, unlike Suckabee, hasn’t been trying to steal the limelight from McCain. Bet on Mitt.

  24. Ted says :

Despite the Dems and the allied main stream media’s desperation to see Romney as McCain’s Veep, Mitt is clearly out, with (1) Obama doubling down on the class warfare theme (McCain’s 7 houses) and (2) McCain doubling down with ads showing the hypocrisy of Biden attacking Obama in the primaries — Romney did way more than that contra McCain.

This leaves only Govs Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty. Pro-abortion Ridge and Dem-Lieberman were never real considerations, despite relentless media goading. Pawlenty’s lackluster TV performances, coupled with Palin pizzazz, the primacy of oil drilling and the ticked off women/Hillary voters, does now portend a McCain/Palin checkmate on the Dems. This is so albeit the Dems and liberal media dare not mention Palin’s name, that is, everyone but…..

And if there’s any question as to Palin being uniquely positioned and able to more than nullify Biden in debate, see the excellent discussion at palinforvp.blogspot.com

    Team McCain, well done!!!
