Alternate Forms of Travel

hitch hike

My dorm closes this Wednesday for Thanksgiving break, leaving me with a major travel dilemma. I don’t have a car on campus so that leaves driving home off the list. The standards, flight and train, are so dang expensive - and I spent my entire semester budget on beer and pot.

It looks like I have no other option than finding an alternative form of travel to get home to Boston from New Jersey. It’s time to get crack-a-lackin’…

Craigslist
Craig dedicates a full page to “Rideshares” in the ‘Community’ section. You’ll need to split gas with the driver, most likely pay for tolls and travel at their pace. When you make contact feel out the situation. If the person seems the least bit psycho look elsewhere.

Chinatown bus
The Chinatown bus runs between DC, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. They also have frequent promotions to random cities around the east coast (right now they are running $70 round trip from NY to Nashville). For me to travel from NY to Boston it will cost $15 each way – not bad at all! Only downfall is it’s a little slow and you will be packed in like a sardine with people who just came to America illegally from China and smell like fish.

Hitchhike
A forgotten art form that used to be wildly popular in the youth heyday of our parents. Apparently drivers and hitchhikers alike woke up to the true dangers of hitchhiking but desperate times do call for desperate measures. Hit a truck stop, wear your college hoodie and talk it up with some of the drivers. Just remember, like Craigslist’s “Rideshare,” if the person who offers you a ride is sketchy or get sketchy during the ride get out immediately. And watch your butt hole!

Horse
You can rent a washed up hiking horse from a stable and ride it to your location. You can’t take Mr. Ed on the highway, you need to save some cash to feed it and you can’t expect to cover too much ground quickly but it’s definitely an alternative form of travel.

Run
Buy a nice pair of shoes and hit the ground running. If you can cover 20+ miles a day this could be an effective form of travel depending on how far you need to go.

Taxi ditch
This one is illegal and I don’t recommend it at all, but if you feel like taking a cab to your destination and ditching just remember have a solid backyard/back alley route planned that would be tough for an outside to navigate and make sure your safe house is at least 3 blocks or a quarter mile away. Only the very fit (someone who can dead sprint for over 2 minutes in case you need to get away) should attempt this one and you really can’t be carrying any baggage with you.
