Silva stomps Irvin at UFC Fight Night

Just when you thought it was safe to say Fedor has regained his crown of pound for pound greatest MMA fighter on the planet, this happens…on the same night. In an obvious (though they denied it) attempt to draw eyes away from Affliction : Banned (unnecessary, really, the Banned guys did a horrible job advertising), Dana White and company set up a fight card on the same evening, featuring their best fighter, Anderson Silva, moving up a weight class to test the 205 waters. Critics of the UFC said this was a stupid risk. Silva’s opponent, while not a world beater, was the ever-dangerous James ‘The Sandman’ Irvin, who’s basically made a career off of bizarre defeats (in one of his fights, his opponent tried to double leg him and they both broke through the cage wall, ending up in the crowd, WWE-style) and quick ridiculously brutal knockout victories. He’s not ‘amazing’ but he’s very random, and under the dictionary definition of ‘Puncher’s Chance,’ you’ll see Irvin’s picture. There was also talk of Irvin being bigger and stronger then any guy Silva has faced, etc.

These worries ended up being unwarranted. Silva is better then Irvin at everything Irvin does best, and good at things Irvin doesn’t know how to do. He’s simply a far superior fighter and he showed that on Saturday night when he ripped ‘The Sandman’s’ face off in 61 seconds. Read More »

10 Reasons MMA Can’t Be Beat

MMA

My favorite sport can kick your favorite sport’s ass…literally. MMA has been exploding over the past couple of years—merchandise, reality shows, pay-per-views—and in my opinion it’s the best sport on Earth. Here are some reasons why:

10) Post-fight interviews with Joe Rogan

Interviewing an athlete after a major win or loss can be difficult at the best of times; just look at KG’s interviews after the Celtics won the NBA title this year. But interviewing a fighter after he got his ass kicked is damn near impossible. The UFC insists on doing interviews in the ring immediately following fights. They send Joe Rogan into the cage to ask fighters how they feel and to tell everyone how the fight went down. Replays are shown on the Jumbotron so fighters can give play by plays, but what usually happens is a jumbled mess. A lot of fighters don’t speak English well, or at all, and can barely hear/understand Rogan over the crowd. Other fighters simply watch the replay and make no comments, or say things like, “Yeah I kicked his ass!”, and others are so happy they just talk about being happy, not the fight. Needless to say, it’s hilarious watching Rogan try to make that mess into something viewers are actually interested in. Read More »

Grove, Sadollah come up big in UFC’s TUF Finale

UFC

Another season of Spike TV’s the Ultimate Fighter has passed, and whether or not you like this show (7 seasons in and it has lost some luster), you must admit, these free ‘Finale’ cards on Spike are great. And they are especially great when the UFC’s acknowledges (finally) that we don’t want to see the rejects from the show beat out boring decisions. We want to the see winners, maybe one grudge match, and then some real fights with real implications. On June 21st that is exactly what we got.

Here’s COED’s recap and thoughts on the card, working backwards from the headliner to the first televised fight. Read More »

Countdown to UFC 77

UFC 77

The time has come for Rich Franklin and Anderson Silva to throw down.

Not saying I have a man crush, but if I did - I would be Rich Franklin’s bitch. But let’s be serious for a moment, Anderson can Muy Thai his ass all over Ohio - but at the end of the day, Rich Franklin is going to dominate. Rich has striking power that will shut down Anderson’s chin. Silva got lucky last time, but he had the benefit of being the first top-class Muy Thai fighter to meet Franklin.

Rich Franklin, a former elementary school teacher, has been training with the top striker, Muy Thai and “Gracie” trainers in the world. Let’s be serious: Franklin’s biggest flaw is his ground work. Guys like Franklin and Liddell had a time and place in 1-dimensional fights; that time is gone. No one even realizes that Chuck Liddell began as a kick boxer…probably because you can count the number of times Chuck kicks in a fight on one hand. Thank GOD Rich Franklin has seen the light and started to train in multiple disciplines.

As such, Anderson Silva is going to get his ass kicked. 3rd round knockout - Franklin wins.

Also on the card, is Tim Sylvia Vs. Brandon Vera. Vera is 8 and 0, and everyone thinks he is the new worlds’ prodigy. He is being put up against Tim “The Maniac” Sylvia. This is like a little boy hitting a homerun in t-ball, so his coach put him up against Roger Clemens (in his prime). I rarely use the euphemism that a fighter is going to get sodomized, but sadly, Brandon Vera is going to get absolutely abused and ass-hammered by Sylvia.

1st round rape - Sylvia wins.

A full breakdown of the card after the jump. Read More »
