Album Review: Lupe Fiasco’s “The Cool”

Lupe Fiasco The CoolLupe Fiasco’s debut album Food and Liquor showcased the quick-witted rapper’s penchant for good vibes and G.O.O.D. beats, following in the footsteps of Chicago’s pride and joy, Common and Kanye West. His ambitious coupling of diverse subjects and long narratives (summarized with his heartfelt paean to skateboarding, “Kick, Push”) made for a well-rounded but exhausting listen (the nine-minute “Outro” was a miscalculation).

Being too eager to please all audiences may have stunted Food and Liquor ever so slightly, but not enough to consider it anything less than a good album by a promising artist. Now in 2007, The Cool is upon us.

After a poetry-slam intro and a forgettable, minute-long Akon-esque dirge The Cool picks up where Food and Liquor left off, with Fiasco’s witty wordplay and ever-changing flow dominating “Go Go Gadget Flow,” while “The Coolest” echoes latter-day Jay-Z over brooding synth-work. So far, so-so. Read More »

Top Hip-Hop Songs Honoring Moms

Kanye West, Donda West

Donda West, mother of outspoken hip-hop auteur Kanye West, passed away over the weekend from complications during cosmetic surgery. With big-name MCs like Jay-Z offering up condolences we figured today would be a good day to honor the greatest dedications to mothers in hip-hop.

Kanye West - “Hey Mama” (Late Registration)

In lieu of recent events Kanye’s “Hey Mama” has taken on a more important role: what was once a jubilant track dedicated to his mom raising him is now a heartfelt, last-goodbye on record. Over world-music inspired beatwork and gospel claps ‘Ye sounds far different than the heartless, egocentric MCs most associate him with. Humility goes a long way, and I’m sure he will revisit this subject with even more honesty in the near future. Read More »

80s Burger Rap

50 Cent: 1, Kanye West: 0

50 CentFiddy must be mighty happy to see his name above the College Dropout on Forbes’ Hip-Hop Cash Kings list for 2006. Kanye: PWNED.

Curtis Jackson’s fiscal year sported a $36 million-dollar earning (ranking #2), most likely from his ridiculous Vitamin Water payoff along with his clothing line. Mr. West, on the other hand, raked in $17 million (#8) in total income – chump change when comparing to 50.

But does 50’s win in the Battle of the Bling have any effect on who will tally up more sales when both rappers release albums (Curtis for 50, Graduation for ‘Ye) on September 11?

It’s up for debate, but not likely.

Wu-Tang, Beatles Bring the Mother****ing Ruckus

Wu Tang

It was bound to happen: a collaboration between Shaolin’s finest and Liverpool’s favorite lads. It has been confirmed that yes, Wu-Tang Clan will be “covering” the George Harrison-penned “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” from The Beatles’ classic self-titled 1967 album (also known as the “White Album”). The song is titled “Gently Weeps” and will (hopefully) be featured on the upcoming 8 Diagrams, the Wu’s first studio album since 2001’s Iron Flag.

Before Beatlemaniacs get their collective panties in a bunch, know that George Harrison’s son, Dhani Harrison, has not only given a nod of approval but will be featured on the backing track, playing acoustic guitar alongside chord-molester John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Can you say “posse cut”?
