Pandora’s Screwed: iTunes 8 Hits All the Right Notes

Apple released a brand new iPod on Tuesday and while the rest of the nation was captivated by all the pretty colors and the new gizmo’s shake-to-shuffle feature, I was a little busy geeking out about the other announcement: iTunes 8.

Unlike previous incarnations, iTunes 8 is shaking up the application for the first time in years, this time with the introduction of a better visualizer, a new way to peruse your library and a handy little feature called Genius. Read More »

Welcome, Freshmen. Have an iPod.

Welcome, Freshmen. Have an iPod.

Taking a step that professors may view as a bit counterproductive, some universities are doling out Apple iPhones and Internet-capable iPods to students.

The always-on Internet devices raise some novel possibilities, like tracking where students congregate. With far less controversy, colleges could send messages about canceled classes, delayed buses, campus crises or just the cafeteria menu.

While schools emphasize its usefulness — online research in class and instant polling of students, for example — a big part of the attraction is, undoubtedly, that the iPhone is cool and a hit with students. Basking in the aura of a cutting-edge product could just help a university foster a cutting-edge reputation. [NY Times]

Study: Cost Often Not Factor When Picking College

Even if a student plans on a major where the financial rewards aren’t so obvious, such as art history or philosophy, most American families don’t factor in their child’s expected earning power when considering the potential debt load for college.

That’s according to a study released Wednesday by student lender Sallie Mae, which also found 40 percent of families don’t limit their search for a school based on the total expense. [AP]

Becoming Textually Active with Obama

I’ve been textually active for about a year now. Everyone my age is doing it. And, now, Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama is too — and he wants to be textually active with me.

Sure, he’s intelligent and good-looking. And he seems nice enough. But do I really want this relationship with him? [Youth Vote Blog]

COED Meets The Ting Tings

The Ting Tings

Most people’s first encounter with the ultra hip, uber talented band, The Ting Tings can be attributed to Steve Jobs and his brilliant iPod commercials. Their song, Shut Up and Let Me Go, was catchy, fun and piqued everyone’s interest…in more than an MP3 player. Fortunately, that song wasn’t the only trick up The Ting Tings’ sleeve.Their newest album, We Started Nothing, is further proof of this duo’s serious talent. Unable to get those songs out of our heads, COED just had to get the story behind the band. So, we did. The good news: Katie White is just as down to earth and cool as she is talented. And, though we didn’t get to chat with Jules, we are pretty sure the same goes for him.

COED: We Started Nothing is chock full of textured beats, irresistible melodies and witty lyrics- where do the songs come from?
The Ting Tings: We didn’t intend to form in a band so I think it came from a very honest place, because when we wrote these songs we didn’t think anyone would ever hear them. We just wrote them to play for our friends at parties. We were both feeling quite frustrated at the time and very sort of, I don’t know, like, invisible. We had been in a band that hadn’t worked out, we had a bit of a horrible time with it; I think it came from a real frustrated point of view, but they weren’t negative songs; they were just songs to make us feel better.

COED: Could you describe your song writing process?
TT: It’s completely different for every song. Both myself and Jules write everything together. Sometimes it will be that I will come up with something on the guitar and then we’ll come up with an idea on top of that. Or Jules might come up with something on the guitar or drums, or we’ll play keyboards or we’ll just have this little percussive sound. We just turn to sing like guy vocals and then an idea will come out of it. Read More »

You Share, I Share with miShare

miShare

Although sharing music is far easier than it was a decade ago, we the people aren’t satisfied yet, and continue to make the act of sharing more convenient, pesky cables be damned.

miShare hopes to help hapless travelers with a more intuitive way to share music, without the need of a computer. Skipping the middleman, the gadget allows two iPods to connect directly to the unit, allowing one ‘Pod to share playlists with the other. You set up an “On the Go” playlist with the files you want to share, press the single button on the device and presto - instant swap meet. On average, miShare transfers at 500kb a second, or 10 seconds per song.

Before all you tech geeks roll your eyes and state that the Zune has a similar feature from the get go, know that some of us out there - gasp! - like the iPod better, even with its shortcomings.

Priced at $100, miShare may be a tall order for what is essentially an iPod hack. But for those looking for a convenient way to share their entire library on the go, there’s no better alternative…unless you want a Zune. But hey, a product that looks like a digital double-dildo has its merits, right?

Qtrax: 25 Million Free and Legal Music Downloads, Zero Major Label Love

Qtrax

If you can’t beat them, (reluctantly) join them - or don’t.

New P2P website Qtrax was scheduled to launch this morning with support from the four major labels - Universal Music Group, Sony-BMG Music, Warner Music Group, and EMI Group - but alas, they all dropped out last minute. One can guess the reason had something to do with not being super profitable, or maybe they’re all just being the man that wants to keep the people down.

While similar P2P sites have been around forever (with varying results), Qtrax is unique to an extent. The network exclusively relies on advertising that comes with their software for profit. (According to Qtrax the ads are not AdWare or SpyWare - how nice of them!) If you can live with a few annoying pop-ups and banners here and there, you’ll be treated to over 25 million downloadable songs for free - and 100% legal to boot. No shady subscriptions, no major problems.

Well, that was until the majors dropped out. Read More »

Get Classy with a XYXX Condom Case

XYXX Condom Case

Girls like dopey cute guys, but not the types that fumble around with condom wrappers and put the safety net on backwards. That’s not dopey or cute - it’s stupid and embarrassing.

Also, stuffing a pack of condoms in your pocket not only looks ridiculous (responsible, but ridiculous) but also may look quite unattractive to females. Would you be turned on by a girl with condoms visibly stuffed in her pants pocket? Don’t answer that. Read More »

JetBlue to Offer Free In-Flight Wi-Fi

JetBlue wi-fi

In our endless search for maximum comfort, man has gone to great lengths to feel at home, whether on the road or in air. A moment away from our mobile devices makes us irritable; JetBlue knows this and is planning to keep us connected.

The Wall Street Journal reported today that JetBlue will begin a trial run with free in-flight Wi-Fi for passengers aboard selected planes starting December 11. Yahoo and Research In Motion Ltd. are the supported formats thus far, meaning that browsing will be limited to email and IMs.

Still, it’s better than nothing for tech-types that need their quick fix. Read More »

Amazon Kindle’s Stock Dwindles Quick

Amazon Kindle

If you were planning on purchasing Amazon’s ebook reader, the Kindle, you may have to wait longer than expected.

After much skepticism of the product, let alone who the gadget’s target audience would be, Kindle sales soared past all expectations, going out of stock in two days. Who knew that a portable electronic device not named iPod, Nintendo DS or Sony PSP would be in demand this holiday season?

The Kindle’s early success is mainly due to its exclusivity - how many other ebooks are on the market, let alone created by one of the world’s major book sellers? - but it’s undeniable that the convenient, user-friendly system is what attracts bookworms without feeling like they’re stepping away from…well…reading a book. COED Presents: Travel Essentials

Travel tips

Whether taking a flight home for the holidays or embarking on a cross-country road trip, traveling with electronics is essential to your happiness, unless you enjoy being bored out of your mind and are allergic to fun. If that’s the case…I can’t help you. Nobody can.

The following gadgets will assist you greatly on your grand adventure:

Nintendo DS

I love the multi-purpose Sony PSP as much as the next guy (what does that phrase even mean?), but I find myself returning to the simple charms of the Nintendo DS far more often. The stylus-based gameplay is tailor-made for wasting time during those long stretches on the road/in the air. Couple that with a long battery life and it’s a no-brainer (unless you have Brain Age 2).
