Fresno State Earns Stunning NCAA Title

In Stunning Victory Fresno State Wins The College World Series

Steve Susdorf brandished the championship trophy and Kris Tomlinson held a bag of ice to the left eye socket he had bruised moments earlier in a celebratory dog pile. Their Fresno State teammates wandered through a crowd of players, coaches, friends and family in front of the first-base dugout, looking for people to hug.

Four weeks after they scraped into the NCAA tournament, seeded fourth and last in their regional pod, the Bulldogs were perhaps the most unlikely champions in college baseball history, and no one could stop smiling. [uwire]

Mocking the Mock Draft

With the NBA draft just around the corner, it’s time to project which players will have which shiny new hats bestowed upon them. But this isn’t your typical mock draft; it’s SIOC’s Mock Mock Draft, where you’ll find out what each team really needs. [SI On Campus]

University of Minnesota Denies Victoria’s Secret

Don’t expect to see Goldy Gopher on Victoria’s Secret merchandise anytime soon.

University of Minnesota officials have notified its licensing agency that they do not want their mascot associated with Victoria’s Secret PINK Collegiate Collection.

“We are not making a judgment in regards to Victoria’s Secret,” said University spokesman Dan Wolter. “We just don’t feel it is in our institution’s best interest right now.” [Star Tribune]

Tim Tebow’s Name Comes Up In Sexual Obscenity Trial

Tim Tebow’s Name Comes Up In Sexual Obscenity Trial

File this under the perils of popularity. And there’s not a lot Tim Tebow can do about it.

Arguably the most popular athlete in the state of Florida — and whose legend has grown beyond all boundaries of college football (search: circumcision) — Tebow’s name surfaced in an unusual arena — a sexual obscenity trial.

Seriously. [Orlando Sentinel]

JJ Redick Needs To Be Back In College

Must have been fun averaging over 30 pts a game and draining 19 foot threes in college eh JJ? And it must have been even more fun knowing that the ladies were lining up just to take pictures with you, and in some cases licking those pictures. But oh how times have changed for Mr. JJ Redick. Cinderella Fresno State Pushes Third Game In CWS

The final numbers, if not quite staggering, were at least a bit outsized, especially for a College World Series game.

Between them, Fresno State and Georgia combined for 35 hits and 29 runs — an unrelenting parade of 29 singles, eroding the arms and perhaps the sanity of both pitching staffs. The teams tried 10 pitchers, most of them pitching on little more than willpower at the end of a long season, and the group produced a 14.29 ERA.

In the end, after 3 hours, 55 minutes of slap hits, line drives and runs, runs, runs, the game’s 100th batter, Georgia cleanup hitter Rich Poythress popped up a pitch from Jake Hower. Second baseman Erik Wetzel settled under it on the outfield grass and a Fresno State team no one expected to be here had survived another elimination attempt, 19-10.

Wednesday night, the Bulldogs and Bulldogs will play a third time to decide the NCAA championship. [UWIRE]

86% Of College Baseball Players Are White

86% Of College Baseball Players Are White

It’s hard to watch the college-baseball World Series, under way now in Omaha, Neb., without noticing how different the college game is from the major-league version. Not in the caliber of play or the funny ping of the aluminum bats, but in the way the players look.

College players in the three main divisions are 86% white, according to the most-recent NCAA figures. That’s a big difference from Major League Baseball, where one study puts the number at less than 60%. The most striking difference is in the number of Latinos on the field: They made up about 29% of all major leaguers in 2007 but only 5% of players in college. [WJS]

Arizona Wildcat’s Basketball Hopes Ride On An SAT Score

Arizona fans have Thursday marked on their calendars.

That’s the day Brandon Jennings is scheduled to receive his final SAT score, and if the score is sufficient the McDonald’s All-American will be eligible to compete as a freshman for the Wildcats (pending clearance from the NCAA, of course) this season. It’s supposed to be a big development, one way or another. So I called Jennings’ advisor, Kelly Williams, on Sunday to see how things were going, how he was feeling and whether anything had changed.

What I learned is Thursday probably won’t end Jennings’ anxiety. [Sportsline]

The Big East conference is forming a new men’s lacrosse league that will include national champion Syracuse.

The league will start competition in the spring of 2010 and will include Syracuse, Providence, Rutgers, St. John’s, Villanova, Notre Dame and Georgetown.

The schools will play each other once.

The conference’s 16 athletic directors unanimously approved the new league during recent meetings. The conference will apply for an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Syracuse, which won its 10th NCAA title last month, had played as an independent, while the other schools were scattered in other leagues. [AP]

Former President Clinton Backs Out Of UCLA’s Commencement Ceremony

Former President Bill Clinton won’t be addressing graduates at the UCLA College of Letters and Science commencement ceremony on Friday, June 13, as previously scheduled.

UCLA Chancellor Gene Block will deliver keynote remarks to approximately 4,000 graduating seniors and their guests at the event, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) asked Clinton and others not to speak at UCLA while its union members are working without a contract and negotiating with the University of California system.

“It’s unfortunate that union activities are affecting a UCLA event intended to celebrate student achievement,” said Judith L. Smith, dean and vice provost of undergraduate education at the UCLA College of Letters and Science. “While we’re disappointed for students and their family members looking forward to hearing a former president speak, we anticipate a joyful mood as we send off graduating seniors with a ceremony filled with colorful traditions.” [UCLA.NewsRoom]

On Sunday, Bone took a 1-0 lead over DA Zeus when Wake Forest beat University of Virginia 80-64.

As Bone predicted, Lawrence Joel Coliseum was rocking behind James Johnson’s 21 point performance. DA Zeus said the key to the game would be Hasheem Thabeet and what a game he had, scoring a career-high 24 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked six shots in leading No. 19 UConn to a spread busting 80-68 win on Saturday.

Today we add two new cappers to the mix, Gebsta and Fenboy - lets see how they do.

Best College Football Tailgates

tailaget 3

Some consider the college football tailgate, a hobby - yet others, an art form.

We are COED have learned that, “Go Big or Go Home!” is not just a mantra for drunk frat boys looking for a place to puke, but rather a rule of thumb that helps differentiate true tailgates from a bunch of dudes partying out of their trunks.

The latter is not fit for man nor beast, but a real tailgate will make you believe in the kind of God who likes to eat and drink before a football game.

Top 10 College Football Players of All-Time

Vince Young

Don’t get me wrong, there have been tons of truly amazing football players in the ranks of the NCAA - but there are a rare few that deserve recognition. Some have committed murder, yet others have gone on to illustrious careers that led to the Hall of Fame - some have done both. Cheers gentlemen!

Top Ten College Football Players of All-Time

10. Vince Young -Texas
In the 2006 Rose Bowl, he completed 30 of 40 passes for 267 yards and carried the ball 19 times for 200 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. Those 200 rushing yards set a Bowl game rushing record by a QB. He was named Rose Bowl MVP for the second time in his career.

9. Tommy Nobis – Texas
He averaged nearly 20 tackles a game as a two time All-American linebacker and made the All-Southwest Conference team three times. Nobis also played on both defense and offense for his entire college career, playing guard on the offensive side of the ball.

8. Roger Staubach – Navy
As a junior in 1963, he won the Heisman Trophy and the Maxwell Award, while leading the Midshipmen to a 9-1 record and No. 2 final ranking. In his three seasons at Navy, he completed 292 of 463 passes, with only 19 interceptions, and gained a school record 4,253 yards of total offense. Read More »
