I Was(n’t) There: A Slacker’s Guide to Lollapalooza

Instead of slapping on suntan lotion, smokin’ a doobie, and heading to Grant Park to watch tons of awesome bands at this year’s Lollapalooza, we’re still at the office like a bunch of frickin’ dumbasses. But we know we’re not alone, so we’ve scoured the Web to find all the best coverage, videos, tidbits and music coming out of Lollapalooza 2008. It’ll seem like you’re actually there, but without all the sweaty people and $25 bottles of water.

Check out the best Lollapalooza-covering Sites on the flip side! Read More »

Lollapalooza 2008 Rocks You Long Time

It’s a revival! This year’s Lollapalooza at Chicago’s Grant Park promises to rock the pants off, well, anybody wearing pants like no other time since Jane’s Addiction glory days. The madness kicks-off tomorrow (Aug. 1st) with bands like The Black Keys, Gogol Bordello and Radiohead ready to rock down the house–and that’s just day one.

The festival goes until August 3rd, with Rage Against the Machine reuniting to end the second day, and Kaye West–who’s reportedly being introduced by Mr. Hope, Sen. Barack Obama himself–will close out the festival. (Nine Inch Nails is playing at bascially the same time.) You can check out the entire line-up here.

Unfortunately, rumor has it that most days for the festival are all sold out, but luckily you can still get tickets here… And you thought we wouldn’t hook you up…

Radiohead and NIN to Headline Lollapalooza?

Radiohead NIN Lollapalooza 2008

Yes, you may have heard the rumor last week, but an official word may be coming soon: Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails are expected to headline Lollapalooza at Grant Park in Chicago. The festival will be held on August 1 - 3; the lineup has yet to be announced.

While both bands are still only expected to perform at Lollapalooza, one thing is for certain: their shared notion of low-priced digital downloads (and little to no pull from major labels) is a great stride in the right direction for the burgeoning music industry - the people’s side, that is.

Artistic credibility aside, respect is due.

In other anticlimactic news, fairy-haired blowhard Perez Hilton isn’t too impressed about the two bands headlining, quipping “This would have been a great lineup…10 years ago!”

You wouldn’t exist 10 years ago, Hilton - God bless and curse the Internet.

20 Alt-Rock Songs You Must Download at Once!

download music

Although much of the music world is in shambles - I’m looking at you gangsta rappers and label reps - the alternative rock scene is very strong.

The following bands may not be getting rich from their art (because of pirating and contracts that rape them of well deserved royalties) but they sure do put out some incredible music.

Here are the 20 songs you should download RIGHT NOW. Mind you I said “Download” because who has $10 laying around to buy an overpriced album from Wal-Mart or Apple, even if the artist really does deserve the money? Not me! Read More »

EMI to Sell Radiohead’s Past Catalog in Three Different, Overpriced Bundles

Radiohead Limited Edition USB package

Radiohead’s pay-what-you-want business model for In Rainbows wasn’t exactly the death knoll to the music industry that people claimed it to be. The end of the music industry as we know it? No way. Savvy marketing? Absolutely!

Now, weeks after In Rainbows release Radiohead’s former label EMI is planning to sell the band’s entire back catalog digitally on December 10…for a sh*t-ton of money! Yay! Read More »

Radiohead’s “In Rainbows”: Track-by-Track

Radiohead - In Rainbows

When the clock struck 12:00 this morning Radiohead fans clamored to their website and downloaded their new album In Rainbows in record numbers, causing the server to crash as expected. With a digital copy safe in my clutch I, at the same time as any music critic in my time zone (no promos for the big mags), will listen to the album.

Radiohead, without a label, have released an album where the consumer names the price (I paid $8), with all marketing done in a respectable fashion (read: no media schlepping).

Without further ado here’s the track-by-track review of In Rainbows:

“15 Step”

Right upon the first flurry of beatwork on “15 Step” its noticeable that Radiohead’s cold, terse electronics - paging Kid A - have been ditched for the brighter corners of IDM. Tinny drum machine beats (reminiscent of Autechre’s “Dael” from Tri Repetae - an opener as well) dart and shuffle around Thom Yorke, whose lyrics are far less oblique here than on past recordings (mentions of natural progression are abound). Nothing groundbreaking, but a cryptic listen nonetheless.

Pundits may call “15 Step” a slightly-too-light version of “Idioteque”; while the comparison to the most brittle of Radiohead’s tracks may not be far off the mark, it doesn’t do “15 Step” full justice. As a frayed, sunrise-type of opener the song succeeds. It would fit snugly into Hail to the Thief’s tracklisting, which can mean a number of things depending on your opinion of that album.

“Bodysnatchers”

The simplicity of “15 Step” rears its head on “Bodysnatchers,” a more colorful attempt at the midtempo chug-along. Distorted, multi-tracked guitar (courtesy of Jonny Greenwood) muddies up an otherwise by-numbers Radiohead affair, complete with a rambling Yorke and slippery bassline.

The ending coda teases the structure to a fine degree, echoing the frazzled and fried jangle of “Electioneering” from OK Computer. Satisfying but curiously lacking, to be honest. Read More »
