Crazy UFC News: Couture Returns

Craziness! It seems that the lawyer’s from the UFC finally submitted Randy Couture and Mark Cuban in the battle to decide where the now-45-year-old cage veteran will be allowed to fight. People in Las Vegas have been whispering for some time that UFC President Dana White and Randy had begun to renegotiate on more personal (read: no lawyers) terms–and it turns out the rumors are true! Rampage Jackson Healthy, May Have Legal Trouble.

After wrecking some sh*t in his giant truck, getting arrested, then bailed out (by Dana White), claiming that he was God and being admitted to a hospital for observation, former UFC Light Heavyweight Champ Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson is apparently back to what equates to normal.

He was seen walking around Minneapolis during the pre-fight preparations for UFC 87, accompanied by Dana White, and he spoke at a press conference for the event.

Apparently Dana is Quinton’s new security, at least until the UFC can be sure that he’s not the crazy dude he was acting like a few weeks ago. Jackson can be seen in several of Dana White’s UFC 87 video blogs.

Everyone at COED is pleased to hear that ‘Page is healthy both mentally and physically, but his time in the spotlight of bad fortune may not be over just yet. Apparently when Rampage went on his, well, rampage, he may or may not have caused the miscarriage of a Huntington Beach, CA resident’s unborn child. (Whoops!) Read More »

UFC 87 Recap: GSP Defends 170lb Title; Florian, Lesnar come up big.

John Fitch is ridiculously tough. Before fighting GSP at the Target Center, he was tied with Royce Gracie for the most consecutive wins in the UFC. Unfortunately, being tough and gritty alone doesn’t make you a champion.

Fitch fought valiantly for five rounds against what is arguably the greatest athlete in all of MMA and one of the most dynamic fighters of all time, Georges St. Pierre. Pierre proved to be faster, stronger, and more technically skilled then the American Kickboxing Academy member and beat him standing and on the ground.

Early in the first round the Champ almost had the challenger finished, checking a kick with a vicious right hand that crumpled Fitch. The following ground and pound attack was furious, but not enough to put away the stalwart Fitch. Save a short rally in the second round, the remainder of the fight was owned by the Canadian, who took his opponent down at will and landed with crisp strikes while standing. After the fight, BJ Penn jumped into the cage in an attempt to hype a match up between the two. Here’s hoping. Read More »

Silva stomps Irvin at UFC Fight Night

Just when you thought it was safe to say Fedor has regained his crown of pound for pound greatest MMA fighter on the planet, this happens…on the same night. In an obvious (though they denied it) attempt to draw eyes away from Affliction : Banned (unnecessary, really, the Banned guys did a horrible job advertising), Dana White and company set up a fight card on the same evening, featuring their best fighter, Anderson Silva, moving up a weight class to test the 205 waters. Critics of the UFC said this was a stupid risk. Silva’s opponent, while not a world beater, was the ever-dangerous James ‘The Sandman’ Irvin, who’s basically made a career off of bizarre defeats (in one of his fights, his opponent tried to double leg him and they both broke through the cage wall, ending up in the crowd, WWE-style) and quick ridiculously brutal knockout victories. He’s not ‘amazing’ but he’s very random, and under the dictionary definition of ‘Puncher’s Chance,’ you’ll see Irvin’s picture. There was also talk of Irvin being bigger and stronger then any guy Silva has faced, etc.

These worries ended up being unwarranted. Silva is better then Irvin at everything Irvin does best, and good at things Irvin doesn’t know how to do. He’s simply a far superior fighter and he showed that on Saturday night when he ripped ‘The Sandman’s’ face off in 61 seconds. Read More »

Affliction Filmed by my HS A/V Squad

I blew $50 on the Affliction fight.

I thought for sure it was going to be amazing, with a fight card like what they had - how could it not be? Within the first minute, I was amazed that they had Michael Buffer as the announcer. I thought, WHOAH! Hardcore!

No…not quite. The fighter segments, audio and almost every shot, was being produced by film students. The audio BLEW and every time anyone spoke into the microphone is was easy muffled or crackling. What was a real clue was that all of the graphics were low-res. If you are going to offer a show in HD, at least make an attempt to do the small stuff.

‘Rampage’ Jackson posts bail, hospitalized.

It didn’t take Jackson very long to post the $25,000 bail he needed after going all ’sunday sunday sunday’ in his ‘Rampage-mobile.’ Unfortunately, Jackson didn’t have much time to enjoy his freedom. According to Sherdog.com, friends of Jackson signaled to police that he may be a danger to himself and those around and the cops were back at the house of ‘Page pretty quick… Read More »

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson Arrested.

In a horrible/hilarious act of perfect irony, the now-aptly named Quinton “Rampage” Jackson–typically one of the more casual and lighthearted stars in the UFC–put his enormous lifted truck (with his picture and the word “Rampage” plastered all over it) to good use by going on an all-out vehicular rampage, smashing several cars and then running from the cops. Apparently he’s taking the title loss harder then we thought… Read More »

10 Reasons MMA Can’t Be Beat

MMA

My favorite sport can kick your favorite sport’s ass…literally. MMA has been exploding over the past couple of years—merchandise, reality shows, pay-per-views—and in my opinion it’s the best sport on Earth. Here are some reasons why:

10) Post-fight interviews with Joe Rogan

Interviewing an athlete after a major win or loss can be difficult at the best of times; just look at KG’s interviews after the Celtics won the NBA title this year. But interviewing a fighter after he got his ass kicked is damn near impossible. The UFC insists on doing interviews in the ring immediately following fights. They send Joe Rogan into the cage to ask fighters how they feel and to tell everyone how the fight went down. Replays are shown on the Jumbotron so fighters can give play by plays, but what usually happens is a jumbled mess. A lot of fighters don’t speak English well, or at all, and can barely hear/understand Rogan over the crowd. Other fighters simply watch the replay and make no comments, or say things like, “Yeah I kicked his ass!”, and others are so happy they just talk about being happy, not the fight. Needless to say, it’s hilarious watching Rogan try to make that mess into something viewers are actually interested in. Read More »

Griffin Snatches Title From Rampage at UFC 86

39570.jpgIn what may go down in history as one of the greatest and closely contested UFC title fights in history, Forrest Griffin did what many said could not be done when he shirked his ‘Reality TV Star’ stigma and became the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion of the world. The fight went all five rounds and saw both fighters stay on their feet for the majority, with Quinton Jackson and Griffin both in trouble at various times during the fight.

Griffin employed an insightful game-plan, utilizing his reach and jab to avoid Rampage’s power early on in the fight. Whenever he strayed from this, Jackson made him pay with big shots, rocking him with a powerful uppercut (the same that put Marvin Eastman down in ‘Page’s UFC debut) in the opening round. Forrest showed his chin is not as easily shattered as the Kieth Jardine fight may have led us to believe and managed to recover from Quinton’s power quite well. In the end, it was Forrest’s Thai kicks, chopping the inside and outside of Rampage’s lead left leg, that garnered him the decision. Throughout the fight, Quinton was noticeably hurt and during the second round Griffin cracked him in the knee with such force that it changed the Champ’s usually agile footwork to a flat, stomping affair that kept him from ever getting inside to do real damage. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rampage had something torn or ripped somewhere abouts inside his knee, post-fight. Read More »

COED’s Affliction MMA Primer and Preview

Affliction

Perhaps you’ve heard of Affliction clothing? Even if you haven’t, you’ve seen it. It’s everywhere on television. The shirts with all the flaming skulls and crazy designs on them with the word ‘affliction,’ somewhere. These shirts first started popping up on MMA fighters at UFC events, but have suddenly disappeared from the cage. This is because they were banned by UFC President Dana White and company as soon as Affliction announced they would be hosting their own MMA fight card, which is scheduled for July 19th at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

This wouldn’t be that big of a deal, typically. As MMA has grown in the U.S., we’ve seen plenty of MMA organizations pop up; the IFL, Adrenaline, EliteXC. But Affliction is different in that for their first event, they have assembled what is probably the most ridiculous fight card of 2008. If you don’t recognize these names, its because the UFC doesn’t talk about them (they couldn’t manage to sign them), but the card boasts several UFC veterans as well.

Here’s our breakdown and predictions for some of the more important fights on the card. Read More »
