Facebook Chat is Coming… in 2 Weeks!!

Facebook is set to launch a highly anticipated chat feature in the next 2 weeks to allow for real time communication within the popular social network.

The program will sit at the bottom of the page showing open chat windows and number of friends online. The user can pop out the entire chat interface into a separate window to show online friend lists and current conversations which is similar to Gchat’s Gtalk feature (see screen capture to the right). The users will be able to throw online/offline status easily which is a similar feature to Away Messages in AIM. Users will also be able to clear their chat history and they “online” status will appear throughout the site.

All-in-all it’s a major upgrade for Facebook but let the backlash begin from users who feel Facebook is pushing the instant communication envelope too far.

Is this a good thing or just another worthless piece of functionality?

This is stupid. When this comes out, the first thing I’m doing is turning the feature off on my account. I don’t want people instantly messaging me.

It was only a matter of time before they implemented this; I won’t actually use their web applet, but hopefully some one will make a plugin for Pidgin that will work with it, which is something I’ve wanted since signing up with Facebook in July.

At last, Facebook is offering another unique tool to instantly message in real time other Facebook users.

Now, in the beginning, it will not be as active, but as the word spreads about the instant messaging feature, more friends of friends will start using Facebook IM regularly.

Like anything new, change for many will be slow. However, as a Facebook user, I am excited about the Facebook IM. However, it won’t get as exciting until more people users and even the current users become more active with Facebook.

Meaning they are using it regularly, daily, or at lease every 24 hours or 48 hours tops. In the beginning, a live chat feature will be limited because so many people still rely on “MySpace” or other services solely.

I think “Facebook” will blow “MySpace” out of the water with it’s momentum! There will be more kids playing with “MySpace” because of the ability to create fake profiles especially. — Stanley Carter

Its April 1st (well in the UK) ‘in 2 weeks’ and its day 13 post blog date therefore suggests an within 48 hr launch of now PT (CA/ FB Time) if they honour to the 14 day (2 week) ‘pledge’

i wonder if anyone going to claim FB Chat as a April Fools joke (however maybe they do a teaser as a april fool i wonder if like Google FB are game to a good joke (hopefully not about FBChat tho).
e.g. Myspace & FB join (is an example)
